16 Fundamental Truths

of the Assemblies of God Fellowship

Bible Doctrines | Further Learning

This "Statement of Fundamental Truths" contains the 16 doctrines of the Assemblies of God. These are non-negotiable tenets of faith that all Assemblies of God churches adhere to. Four of these, Salvation, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Divine Healing, and the Second Coming of Christ are considered Cardinal Doctrines which are essential to the church's core mission of reaching the world for Christ.

The Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. This Statement of Fundamental Truths is intended simply as a basis of fellowship among us (i.e., that we all speak the same thing, 1 Corinthians 1:10; Acts 2:42). The phraseology employed in this Statement is not inspired nor contended for, but the truth set forth is held to be essential to a full-gospel ministry. No claim is made that it covers all Biblical truth, only that it covers our need as to these fundamental doctrines.

WordQuest Study Notes

Underneath each video are study notes called, “WordQuest” graciously provided by Rev. Dr. Thomas Keinath. These study notes provide deeper insight into the scriptures for each fundamental truth.

1. The Scriptures Inspired

2 TIMOTHY 3:16 | 2 PETER 1:21

The Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to humanity, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct.

2. The One True God

DEUTERONOMY 6:4 | ISAIAH 43:10-11

The one true God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM,” the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of humanity. He has further revealed Himself as personifying the principles of relationship and association as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

MATTHEW 1:23 | HEBREWS 1:3

The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. The Scriptures declare:

His pre-existent nature as the Word of God, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead, His exaltation to the right hand of God, His gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church, and His soon return.

4. The Fall of Man

GENESIS 1:26, 27 | ROMANS 5:12-19

Humanity was created good and upright, for God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” Humans fell by voluntary rebellion, however, and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God

5. The Salvation of Man

ROMANS 10:13-15 | EPHESIANS 2:8

Humanity’s only hope of redemption is through the blood shed by Jesus Christ the Son of God.

Salvation is received through repentance of sin and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of rebirth and renewal of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, we become heirs of God according to the hope of eternal life.

The inward evidence of salvation is the direct witness of the Spirit. The outward evidence to all people is a life of righteousness and holiness.

6. Ordinances of the Church

Baptism in Water

MATTHEW 28:19

The ordinance of baptism by immersion is commanded by the Scriptures. All who repent and believe on Christ as Saviour and Lord are to be baptized. Thus they declare to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life.

Holy Communion

1 CORINTHIANS 11:26

The Lord’s Supper, consisting of the elements—bread and the fruit of the vine—is the symbol expressing one body of Christ, a memorial of His suffering and death, and a prophecy of His second coming, and is instructed to be practiced by all believers “until He comes.”

7. Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Bible Doctrines #7 copy.jpg

ACTS 1:8 | ACTS 11:14-16

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a post-conversion anointing of power for Christian life and ministry/service, where Jesus pours out the Holy Spirit upon a believer. In addition to increased ministry anointing, Spirit baptism brings a deepened spiritual experience and awareness of God’s presence, intensified consecration and giftedness, strengthened dedication to involvement in service, and a more active love for Christ, His Word, and for the lost.

Spirit baptism was the normal experience of the New Testament Church and is still today. Every believer should earnestly desire this empowering. Also called “the promise of the Father,” Jesus commanded His followers to receive this gift.

8. Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

ACTS 2:4 | 1 CORINTHIANS 12:28

The Bible repeatedly shows the same initial physical evidence as the confirming outward sign, indicating baptism in the Holy Spirit has occurred—speaking with unknown tongues as the Spirit enables. This confirming outward sign of speaking (or praying) in tongues is the same in function as the public gift of tongues, but different in purpose and outcome.

9. Sanctification

ROMANS 12:1-2 | 1 PETER 1:15-16

Sanctification is an act of dedication to God and separation from evil. Scriptures teach a life of holiness because “without holiness no one will see the Lord”. By the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to obey the command: “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’ “

The believer’s sanctification comes through identification with Christ in His death and resurrection, deliberate daily life in light of that union, and continual offering of every aspect of the believer’s life to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

10. The Church & Its Mission

EPHESIANS 1:22-23 | HEBREWS 12:23

The Church is the body of Christ, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a God-given mandate to fulfill the Great Commission. Each believer, born of the Spirit, is part of the general assembly and church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven.

11. The Ministry

EPHESIANS 4:11-16 | JAMES 1:27

God calls and sets in place servant leaders to equip all God’s people to worship God, to become mature followers of Jesus, to meet human needs with love and compassion, and to evangelize the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

12. Divine Healing

Bible Doctrines #12.jpg

ISAIAH 53:4-5 | JAMES 5:14-16

Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is made available through the Atonement, the substitutionary death and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.

13. The Blessed Hope

1 THESSALONIANS 4:16-17 | TITUS 2:13

The resurrection of those who have died in Christ and their transformation together with those who are alive at the imminent coming of the Lord is the blessed hope of the Church.

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

MATTHEW 24:30 | REVELATION 20:1-6

The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel, and the establishment of universal peace.

15. The Final Judgment

MATTHEW 25:46 | REVELATION 20:11-15

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Anyone not found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels, the beast and the false prophet, will be consigned to everlasting punishment in the lake of fire, which is the second death.

16. New Heavens & New Earth

2 PETER 3:13 | REVELATION 21, 22

“In keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
