Day 14: Life
But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
John 10:26-30 (NASB 95)
This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
John 17:3 (NASB 95)
My friend worked for an insurance company where he got paid really well and worked great hours writing policy plans, but seriously hated his job. As soon as he was able, he quit and found something much more rewarding to do with his time.
Unfortunately, this is what so many think Christianity is primarily about; an insurance policy for when we die, so that we’ll end up in the Good Place instead of the Bad One.
Yet Jesus indicates eternal life is much deeper than a simple destination. If Jesus was in the business of writing insurance plans, these scriptures might be some lines He’d include. His policies go into effect immediately.
Eternal life is something that we begin now, in this life. Jesus says that it is to know God, and to know Jesus. If you are a Christian, you have already begun to experience eternal life. Have you ever considered this before?
How does this challenge your expectations?
What do you want to say to God?
How do you want to live today in light of this knowledge?
Today, thank the Good Shepherd that He’s given you more than an insurance policy, but that He’s instead given you something much greater: eternal life. Talk to Him about what this means for you today.
